Children/youth in our community need our help

Across Canada, child/youth abuse is prevalent. Windsor Essex is no exception. These crimes pervade culture, diversity, and all walks of life. The existence of physical and sexual abuse that occurs frequently is not acknowledged to the extent it should be. No one wants to talk about it.

The fact of the matter is, child/youth abuse is happening right now, and our community has a responsibility to help. We need to act now to ensure children/youth and their families receive the support they need.

Here are the facts

In Canada,
1 out of 4 girls
and
1 out of 10 boys
will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18 years

In 75% of these cases, the abuser will be a family member, or someone close to the child/youth

In Ontario,
1 out of 5 girls
and
1 out of 3 boys
will experience physical abuse during childhood

  • These statistics reflect only reported cases.  Many instances of abuse are not reported every year;
  • Children/youth may display symptoms of physical, emotional, and/or psychological abuse. These signs are not always obvious; and
  • The effects of abuse may be short term or may last into adulthood.
